Meta has commenced testing new features on WhatsApp that will enable users to edit photos using artificial intelligence. This will allow them to enhance their images by adding backgrounds or expanding them with a prompt.
The AI-related functions are currently being tested in the image editor on WhatsApp, as reported by WABetaInfo and TheSpandroid. These sites have discovered the new options in version 2.23.17.14 of the WhatsApp beta for Android. While the editing functions are currently not active, two out of the three options have been previously announced for the image editors on Facebook and Instagram. These options include Backdrop and Restyle, where users can replace the background of an image with an AI-generated background and adjust images to a different style using an AI filter, respectively.
Expand, the third option, is currently exclusive to WhatsApp. This feature seems to allow users to increase the size of their images, with any missing parts potentially filled in by AI. It is unclear when or if these AI editing features will be available to all users. Previously, WhatsApp introduced a feature that enables users to create AI-generated stickers.
