Proximus and Telenet may join forces to expand fiber optic network in Belgium to less populated areas

Proximus and Telenet, two Belgian providers, are considering teaming up to bring fiber optic cables to less densely populated areas in Belgium. This collaboration is being explored with the aim of reducing costs and minimizing disruption for local residents.

According to a report by De Tijd, Proximus is currently in discussions with Wyre, a joint venture between Telenet and Fluvius, regarding this potential partnership. The focus of this collaboration would be on B areas, which are areas that are less densely populated compared to A areas (cities and large towns) and C areas (rural areas). Installing fiber optic cables in B areas is particularly costly, so this collaboration could help make it more feasible.

The collaboration is primarily focused on Flanders, with Proximus looking to partner with Orange Belgium for similar initiatives in Wallonia. The involvement of other parties is reportedly minimal, which could establish Proximus, Telenet, and Orange Belgium as key players in the fiber optic market within Belgium.

The deadline for finalizing these partnerships is approaching, although it is uncertain whether details will be made public immediately. The exact impact of these collaborations on the deployment of fiber optic networks in different regions is not yet clear.
