New Dutch Debit Cards Faces Compatibility Issues at Some Payment Terminals

The latest debit cards issued by Dutch banks including bunq, Revolut, Triodos, N26, and Openbank may not be accepted everywhere. Approximately two percent of payment terminals are currently unable to process the new debit cards.

Over time, all debit cards bearing the Maestro or V Pay logos will be replaced by a new type of card. This new card will be either a Debit Mastercard or a Visa Debit card, as explained by a spokesperson for the Payments Association of the Netherlands in an article on NU.nl. While many payment terminals are already equipped to handle these new debit cards, approximately two percent of terminals are still incompatible. Customers may experience difficulties when using the new debit cards for contactless payments with a smartphone, smartwatch, or virtual payment card.

The Dutch Payments Association suggests that most issues can be resolved by updating the software on payment terminals. However, certain locations such as unmanned petrol stations, parking garages, and vending machines may not undergo these updates, leading to continued incompatibility. Additionally, there are specific Verifone devices that are unable to process the new bank cards even after a software update.
