Microsoft has initiated the display of ads within the 'Recommended' section of the Windows 11 Start menu. Currently, only American test users in the Beta Channel will have visibility to these recommendations. The initiative was first revealed by PhantomOcean3.

According to Microsoft's report, US Windows 11 Insiders will encounter standard ads for Microsoft Store apps in the 'Recommended' section of the Start menu within preview build 22635.3495 of the Beta Channel. These ads will be integrated among tips files and frequently used applications typically featured in this area. It remains uncertain whether app developers will need to compensate Microsoft for being recommended via the Start menu.

Devices under organizational management will not receive these app recommendations. Users have the option to deactivate this feature through the settings menu. Microsoft is seeking feedback from test users regarding the app recommendations, following which the company will make a decision about including them in a stable version of Windows 11. PhantomOcean3 alerted the presence of this functionality in the code of a test version of the operating system, as discovered on Tuesday.
