Microsoft has made a strategic investment in Mistral, a French AI start-up valued at around 2 billion euros. Just a year ago, the technology giant poured over 9 billion euros into OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.

The long-term partnership between Microsoft and Mistral will allow Microsoft to leverage Mistral's language models for its Azure AI platform. Like the collaboration with OpenAI, the focus will be on advancing the next generation of large language models. Although the exact financial details of Microsoft's investment in Mistral have not been disclosed.

Furthermore, Mistral is unveiling a new AI model today: Mistral Large. This language model is positioned to rival OpenAI's GPT-4. While Mistral's previous language models were predominantly open source, that is no longer the case. With the partnership with Microsoft, Mistral is pivoting towards a commercial approach.

Additionally, the French start-up is introducing a new chatbot named Le Chat, which incorporates various AI models developed by the company.
