Microsoft has introduced the latest version 2.2.1 of the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2, which comes with various updates. One of the new features is DNS tunneling, which is now enabled by default. This functionality was previously available in WSL 2 2.0 as an experimental feature but is now a standard part of the system.

With DNS tunneling, DNS requests from a virtual machine to the Windows host can now bypass obstacles such as firewalls or VPNs, thanks to virtualization that allows DNS requests from WSL to communicate directly with Windows. Microsoft has also integrated DNS tunneling into Docker.

Additionally, WSL 2 has received several minor bug fixes in this release, including addressing a bug that caused occasional crashes during distro initialization. Microsoft has also updated the underlying Linux kernel to version 5.15.150.1-2, the LTS release.
