ING Introduces Google Pay Support for Android Users Through Banking App, Smartwatch Compatibility Coming Soon

ING is introducing Google Pay support for customers using an Android smartphone. Users can activate this feature through the ING Banking app. Currently, only smartphones are compatible, but an update for smartwatches will be coming soon.

Individual customers now have the ability to save their ING debit and credit cards in their Google Wallet to make tap-and-go payments. However, business customers can only link a debit card. For transactions under 50 euros, customers can simply tap their smartphone against a contactless payment terminal with the screen turned on. This can be done up to three times a day or a maximum of 100 euros. For higher amounts or additional transactions, the device will need to be unlocked, as stated by ING. This feature is currently available in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Google Pay, like other contactless payment services, utilizes the NFC technology in smartphones. Therefore, a smartphone with an NFC chip and Android version 8 or above is required. ING has mentioned that they will also introduce Google Pay support for smartwatches in the near future. Additionally, the bank has recently updated Garmin Pay for select smartwatches. Google Pay has been accessible in the Netherlands since late 2020, allowing banks to integrate the service into their own apps. Apart from debit and credit cards, Google Pay also supports tickets, loyalty cards, and more. ABN AMRO, Bunq, Rabobank, and others already offer this service.
