Google Implements Restrictions on Gemini AI to Answer Election-Related Questions

Google has made the decision to limit the ability of its AI chatbot Gemini to answer questions related to elections. This move comes as various elections are set to take place this year, including in the EU, US, and India. The tech giant confirmed this decision on Tuesday.

"As a precaution on such an important issue, we have started introducing restrictions on the types of election questions Gemini can answer," Google writes in a blog post about the Indian elections. "We take our responsibility to provide high-quality information for these types of questions seriously and are continually working to improve our security measures."

As a result of the restrictions, Gemini will now provide a default response when users ask election-related questions: "I'm still learning how to answer this question. In the meantime, try Google Search." TechCrunch reports that there are ways around these restrictions, such as receiving answers when users make typos.

These restrictions have already been implemented in the United States and are now rolling out in India. Similar restrictions will be put in place in other countries where elections are scheduled to occur this year. For example, the European Parliament elections are set to take place in June.

Many tech companies have taken steps to address AI-generated disinformation surrounding the global elections this year. OpenAI and Meta have announced similar restrictions, while a coalition of twenty tech companies, including Adobe, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, are collaborating to combat misleading AI content surrounding the elections worldwide.
