Google is gearing up to relaunch Gemini's people image generation feature "within a few weeks," according to Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis. The functionality was temporarily disabled recently due to the production of historically inaccurate images of individuals.

During a panel discussion at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Hassabis mentioned that Google aims to have the AI-powered chatbot feature back online 'within a few weeks,' as reported by Reuters. He also acknowledged that the tool did not perform as expected.

Following feedback about representation issues, Gemini ceased producing AI-generated images of people last week. Concerns were raised about the lack of diversity in the images, with examples including inaccurate depictions of historical figures like Vikings, the Pope, and German soldiers from World War II.

In particular, the tool generated images portraying these historical figures with different ethnic backgrounds than historically accurate.
