Google has announced the commencement of the construction of its latest data center in Belgium, set to be situated in the Walloon municipality of Farciennes. The tech giant was granted permission for this project back in February.

The building work on Google's new data center officially began last Friday and is expected to span 'several years' as reported by VRT. With an investment totaling one billion dollars in Belgium, Google is not only constructing the new data center in Farciennes but also expanding its existing data center location in the country. Additionally, the solar park near this location will undergo expansion.

Earlier on, Google had disclosed its plans to establish a new data center in Farciennes. The company envisages having three data centers at that specific location in the long run. While originally planning to kick off construction towards the end of 2023, Google now intends to complete the first data center at the site by 2025. In mid-February, the technology giant obtained the necessary permissions for constructing a data center in Wallonia, with expectations of creating 400 job opportunities through this project.

This new data center complex will mark Google's sixth facility in Belgium, in addition to the five existing data centers in the municipality of Saint-Ghislain. Furthermore, it was announced in 2022 that Google had acquired 36 hectares of land in La Louvière, a municipality in the province of Hainaut. The purpose of this new land acquisition by the tech giant still remains undisclosed.
