Flemish Teenagers Lead in TikTok Usage, Outpacing Meta Apps, imec Study Finds

Flemish teenagers are spending an average of 80 minutes per day on TikTok, surpassing the combined time spent on all Meta apps, as per research conducted by imec.

imec's annual Digimeter Report 2023 reveals that TikTok is highly popular among young people in Flanders, with 63% of individuals aged 18 to 24 using the platform, followed by 30% of those aged 25 to 34. In the age groups of 35 to 44 and 45 to 54 years, the percentages stand at 12 and 14% respectively.

The study highlights that TikTok now accounts for a larger portion of daily screen time compared to all Meta apps combined, with 21% versus 20%. Young TikTok users spend an average of 80 minutes on the platform per day. imec notes that TikTok distinguishes itself by offering longer periods of engagement, as opposed to quick browsing on other platforms.

The report also delves into the average number of apps on devices and daily screen time. The average smartphone in Flanders now has 90 apps, which is 15 more than two years ago. Daily screen time has stabilized at 182 minutes, three minutes less than the previous year. Of this time, 26% is spent on social media, 15% on chat apps, and 10% on video apps.

Despite the consistent average screen time, a growing number of users feel they are spending too much time on their phones. Nearly 44% consider themselves dependent on smartphones, with a significant increase seen among young people. For instance, 71% of individuals aged 18 to 24 now perceive themselves as smartphone-dependent, marking a 9% rise from the previous year. In the age groups of 25-34 and 35-44, the figures are 61% and 62% respectively.
