European Commission to Investigate Apple's Halt on Web App Support in iOS 17.4 in EU

Apple's decision to stop supporting web apps in iOS 17.4 in the European Union is potentially facing scrutiny from the European Commission. The Commission is considering launching an investigation and has requested information from Apple and app developers regarding this decision.

Earlier this month, Apple confirmed that it will no longer support web apps in iOS in the EU as part of its compliance with the upcoming Digital Markets Act, scheduled to take effect in March. Apple cited low usage of web apps as a reason for this decision.

The European Union is now gathering information to determine whether a full investigation into Apple's decision is needed, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The Digital Markets Act, which will come into force on March 8, requires Apple to allow other browser engines besides its own WebKit in its operating system. This would necessitate finding a new way to secure web apps, but Apple has indicated that the effort required may not be justified due to the low number of users accessing web apps.
