X owner Elon Musk has initiated legal action against OpenAI and Sam Altman, the CEO of the company. Musk alleges that OpenAI has prioritized profit over its original mission, specifically by failing to disclose internal details about GPT-4.

According to a court document filed on Thursday, Musk claims that Altman and Greg Brockman, the co-founders of OpenAI, initially approached him to establish an open-source, non-profit organization. Musk, who is also a co-founder of OpenAI but stepped down from the board in 2018.

Musk asserts that OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft contradicts the company's original mission to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity rather than solely for profit, as reported by Reuters. He claims that the company's focus on profitability violates his contract with OpenAI, citing the closure of GPT-4 as an example of the shift towards profit-driven motives. Consequently, Musk is suing the company and Altman for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duties, and unfair business practices.

"OpenAI has evolved into a de facto subsidiary of Microsoft, operating as a closed-source entity. Under its new leadership, OpenAI is not only developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) but also optimizing it to maximize Microsoft's profits instead of utilizing it for the betterment of humanity," Musk stated. Both Microsoft and OpenAI have yet to respond to the lawsuit.
