The Dutch Banking Association reported that the damage caused by bank helpdesk fraud has decreased to 28 million euros in 2023, with a reduction in the number of victims as well. Despite this significant drop, banks acknowledge that the issue remains a 'persistent problem'.

Compared to the previous year when there was almost 51 million euros in damages from bank helpdesk fraud, the amount has been reduced by 45 percent to 28 million euros in 2023, as reported by the Dutch Banking Association. There was also a decrease in damage caused by other forms of fraud such as phishing and theft or loss of payment cards, with the total amount decreasing from 9.9 million in 2022 to 7.7 million in 2023. The number of victims of bank helpdesk fraud has also gone down by 20 percent to just under 10000 individuals.

The NVB attributes this decrease to improved consumer awareness and additional measures taken by banks to protect their customers, such as reducing daily account limits and implementing time slots for increasing limits. However, the NVB highlights that online fraud continues to be a significant issue causing distress and anxiety for victims. Moreover, the proceeds from such fraudulent activities are often used to fund other criminal endeavors, making it a pressing social problem that requires a collaborative effort to address.
