The innovative Belgian grocery store chain, Colruyt, is currently trialing a new smart shopping cart that they have developed in-house. This high-tech shopping cart allows customers to scan products themselves, but it also comes equipped with advanced cameras and sensors to verify purchases.

According to a recent press release from Colruyt, the Smart Cart is jam-packed with intelligent sensors. The supermarket chain claims that this shopping cart utilizes 'artificial intelligence' to accurately identify the products placed in it by customers. However, customers are still required to manually scan their groceries using the built-in scanner on the cart's handle. Payment is said to be seamless, with automatic processing occurring when the customer is ready to leave the store. Moreover, any discounts are instantly applied by the cart.

In addition to its cutting-edge features, the smart shopping cart also boasts a tablet display integrated into the handle. This tablet showcases the cart's contents and current total cost, while offering additional services such as product location assistance and shopping list management. Colruyt envisions the tablet as a potential communication tool between the company and its customer base.

The development of the Smart Cart was completed internally at Colruyt. Testing of the shopping cart will take place at a store location in Halle throughout the upcoming month. Following this trial period, the company will review the feedback and outcomes to determine if further testing with customers will be conducted in 2024.
