ByteDance Asserts it Will Not Sell TikTok and Challenges US Legislation Impacting App Ownership

ByteDance has made it clear that they have no intentions of selling TikTok, as seen in a post on their own social media platform Toutiao. The Chinese company has refuted rumors about a potential sale of TikTok without its algorithm, stating firmly on Toutiao that there are no plans to sell the popular app. ByteDance even shared a screenshot of a recent article by The Information, which claimed otherwise, along with a digital stamp bearing a message in Chinese that translates to "false rumor".

This announcement comes in response to a bill passed by the US House of Representatives and the US Senate at the end of April, which would prevent the distribution, maintenance, or updating of apps controlled by a "foreign adversary" that have a certain number of monthly users.

TikTok is specifically mentioned, but other apps considered to be controlled by foreign adversaries will also be affected. If the criteria are met, these apps must be separated from the parent company within 360 days, or else they will be banned in the US. ByteDance has expressed its disagreement with the US government's rationale in a statement . The company asserts that it has no affiliations with the Chinese government and highlights that a significant portion of the company is already owned by American investors. ByteDance intends to challenge the new law in a US court, aiming to defend its position and ownership of TikTok.
