Brave Enhances Privacy Features with New Browser Update Impacting VPN Service Installation on Windows PCs

Brave has rolled out an update for its privacy-focused browser, addressing the automatic download of its VPN service on Windows PCs. Version 1.64.109 of Brave ensures that the VPN service is no longer included in the browser installation process. Moving forward, users will only have the VPN service installed when they make a purchase of Brave VPN. For users who do not have a subscription to the VPN service and update their browser, the VPN will be automatically removed from their computer.

This change specifically impacts the Firewall+VPN service, which includes Brave VPN and Brave Wireguard and was introduced in 2022 through a partnership between Brave and Guardian. Previously, it was found that Brave users on Windows PCs were receiving the VPN service without their consent. The VPN service would remain inactive until the user subscribed to it. Brave acknowledged this issue and committed to finding a solution.

According to Brave, the VPN service does not transmit any data to the company while in standby mode. Users also had the option to manually remove the Firewall+VPN service if they did not wish to use it. Overall, this update aims to improve the user experience and ensure that privacy remains a top priority for Brave browser users.
