Blizzard Shifts Focus to PvP Gameplay in Overwatch 2 After Scrapping PvE Plans

Blizzard has made the decision to scrap all planned PvE content for Overwatch 2 and will now be concentrating solely on competitive player-versus-player gameplay, according to a report by Jason Schreier from Bloomberg. The decision comes as a result of poor sales figures for paid PvE missions.

Last January, Blizzard reportedly let go of most of the team working on PvE content, as reported by Jason Schreier based on information from insiders. Any content that was still in progress will no longer be completed, with the game now shifting its focus entirely to PvP gameplay, as stated by the Bloomberg journalist.

Schreier also mentioned that the financial performance of Overwatch 2 has been disappointing, resulting in the developers not receiving their usual bonuses this month. Unlike other Blizzard development teams, whose bonuses are typically based on company-wide results, Overwatch 2's team will now be rewarded based on the success of the game itself, starting from last summer. This change has left fans speculating about the future of the game.

Last year, it was announced that the co-op PvE mode Hero Mode had been scrapped. Despite initial claims that Blizzard was still committed to PvE content, it was later revealed that PvE content would be offered in paid bundles. The first bundle, 'Invasion,' which included three story missions, reportedly had poor sales, leading Blizzard to abandon plans for future bundles. When Overwatch 2 was first announced in 2019, PvE missions were intended to be a focal point of the game, but this direction has since changed.

While a Blizzard spokesperson did not directly confirm to Bloomberg that PvE content for Overwatch 2 would cease development, they did mention that the company has been "focusing on the fundamental team-based experience" since last year. This decision was supposedly influenced by feedback from the community, suggesting that PvP gameplay is a priority for the future of Overwatch 2.
