Apple is reportedly developing an AI function that can summarize various types of texts offline. This feature is expected to be able to condense iMessages and Safari web pages, as well as other text documents.

According to AppleInsider, the function will utilize Apple's own language model known as Ajax. The AI technology is designed to identify key words and phrases from lengthy texts, which will serve as the basis for the summaries. In addition to Safari and Messages, Ajax can also process texts from other sources such as digital documents.

It is worth noting that this feature will operate solely on the user's device, in an effort to prioritize user privacy. Apple is reportedly planning to include this AI summary function in version 18 of Safari. Additionally, there are plans to utilize Ajax to provide quick answers to user queries offline, by accessing information stored on the device like contacts or calendar events. However, more complex queries may require server-side processing, potentially involving partnerships with other AI companies like Google or OpenAI, though Apple has not yet finalized any agreements.

Apple is expected to reveal more details about iOS 18 and generative AI at its upcoming WWDC developer conference on June 10.
