AMD Raises Minimum Refresh Rate Standards for FreeSync-Certified Monitors and TVs

AMD is setting higher standards for monitors and televisions seeking a FreeSync certificate. Moving forward, screens with a resolution of less than 3440x1440 pixels must have a minimum refresh rate of 144Hz in order to utilize this technology.

Prior to this update, there were no specific minimum requirements for the refresh rate of desktop screens to utilize FreeSync. However, AMD now states that screens with less than 3440x1440 pixels must support a refresh rate of at least 144Hz. Monitors and TVs with higher resolutions do not have a minimum refresh rate requirement for using this adaptive image refresh technology, as explained by AMD in a recent blog post.

In order to qualify for FreeSync Premium, an additional variant of the technology that includes low frame rate compensation, a minimum refresh rate of 120Hz was previously required. This requirement has been raised to 200Hz for screens with resolutions less than 3440x1440 pixels. Monitors and TVs with higher resolutions must still support a minimum refresh rate of 120Hz. The FreeSync Premium Pro variant follows the same requirements as Premium but also necessitates HDR support in the display. The FreeSync criteria for laptops remains unchanged.

AMD states that these heightened requirements are intended to ensure a high-quality experience with FreeSync technology. The company revised its standards back in September and is now making this announcement. Screens that already have FreeSync certification but no longer meet the updated requirements will still be supported, according to AMD.
